FINDING SUPPORT IN GRIEF CONFERENCE

The annual grief conference just for people bereaved due to substance use related causes is fast approaching. Attending this conference gives you a chance to be around others who really get what you’re going through. There’s no need to explain yourself or worry about judgment, because everyone there understands the unique challenges that come with this kind of loss. It’s also a space where the workshops and conversations are focused specifically on the issues you’re facing, which makes the support feel more personal and relevant. You can connect with others who have experienced similar pain, and that can help ease the sense of isolation. It’s also a chance to honor your loved one in a way that feels meaningful, surrounded by people who understand how complex and heavy this kind of grief can be. I hope you can join us. Register here.

Sign up for volunteer opportunities at the conference. We could use the help!

Want to remember your person by donating a centerpiece? Here’s your chance! You do not have to attend to do so.

~ With care

NEW GROUP ALERT!

We are very excited to announce a new group and facilitator. We are pleased to introduce you to JoAnne Rivieccio who will facilitate an in-person group in Winthrop MA starting 10/8/24. Meet JoAnn!

“My name is JoAnn Rivieccio. I have two sons. My oldest is Franke. He was born on 7/16/77, arrived seven weeks early and won the struggle coming into this world. He passed on 11/15/09 and he also struggled when leaving this world. Addiction is a family disease many of us suffered, grieving while going through addiction until either they find recovery or lose their battle. After a ten year long battle with addiction that started when a motorcycle accident left Franke totally dependent on pain medication, he died. I felt hopeless and alone. I found that many avoided me because they really didn't know how to deal with what I was going through.

My other son Patrick was born on 05/27/80. He also had addiction issues but has found recovery for many years now. He has long term employment and has had the pleasure of having his own family. A son Mason age 16 and Shay age 11.

After losing one of my gifts from god, it was very hard to find services for my grief! My journey was a series of steps, starting with attending vigils and taking a course to become a recovery coach, as well as going to Washington DC and rallying at the Whitehouse and speaking at the Statehouse. I started a weekly one hour show called SOA (Somerville Overcoming Addiction) a group I co-founded with Matt Ganem, Mike Duggan and a few others. My show lasted four years, we interviewed judges, politicians, parents, etc. I took the CCAR course and became a Recovery Coach.

Now is the time to help others with their grief as well as mine.”

Thanks to JoAnn for joining the team to support our community of grievers!

RED SOX

Our grief group members had an incredible time at the Red Sox game, filled with laughter, connection, and shared memories. The sun came out and the sox won! A few people enjoyed their very first time at Fenway! What a beautiful day of community at Fenway Park. Here is just a small glimpse of some of the moments shared. Join us at one of our next events! For those of you who attended post your pictures on our facebook page!

The Sun Will Rise Weekly Update

Week of September 15, 2024

Hello Friends,

We have four in-person regular groups, one regular zoom and four specialty zoom groups this week. Login and location information follow at the bottom of this newsletter.

ART

Being invited to attend many different art shows over the years that have attempted to tackle addiction, grief, substance use, memories, etc… has placed me in unique situation. This unique situation has given me the opportunity to witness the many ways that artists or organizations attempt to capture the complex emotions tied to addiction, grief, and death. While I deeply appreciate the efforts and the creativity behind these projects, they often fall short, not intentionally, of truly conveying the lived experience of loving someone who has died due to substance use. As both a grieving parent and the founder of an organization dedicated to this cause, I feel like I carry the responsibility of balancing appreciation for artistic expression with a desire for authentic, unfiltered representation of this heartbreaking reality. It’s a delicate dance between honoring artistic intentions and holding space for the rawness of grief that can't always be captured on canvas. This weekend as I saw people look at their loved ones on canvas and come together to cry, hug each other, smile over memories or show others their person proudly, I knew this show had hit the mark. Read more about the INTO LIGHT project below.

We all benefit when the world can see who our people were. Do you have a way that you have memorialized your person through art, poem, photography, music or a story that you would like to share with others? We would love to learn more about them. Add your artistic expression to Visions & Voices.

Hello Friends,

We have two in-person regular groups, one specialty in-person group and six specialty zoom groups this week. Login and location information follow at the bottom of this newsletter.

Socializing

One of the things that impacted me greatly in my grief was my capacity for socializing. It was so much easier to sit on my couch and isolate. Going out with people who had not experienced a sudden unexpected death felt uncomfortable. I felt different. If I cried they felt uneasy and if I laughed they thought I was over my loss. I noticed I didn’t feel the same way when I was together with other grievers. The pressure to be the “old me” was not there. We don’t want anyone to feel alone and isolated in their grief so we try to offer events and activities that give you a chance to get together with other grievers and just be yourself. I invite you to join us at any of these events, whether in person or online, and make new connections with other grievers. Read more about How Grief Affects of Social Spheres. And remember, you can always connect our social media as well.

The Sun Will Rise Weekly Update

Week of September 1, 2024

Hello Friends,

We have three in-person regular groups, two regular zoom groups and one specialty zoom group this week. Login and location info. follow at the bottom of this newsletter.

DO YOU THINK THEY HEARD US?

Many of us were loud this month. We told the world about our people. With no stigma, with no shame. I wonder if others who haven’t been affected yet by the grief of overdose or substance use related cause deaths listened? I hope they did. What I do know, is that our community of grievers heard you. And we will remember them. Add your person to our IOAD facebook post, the SADOD Honoring the Many online memorial or the Mosaic Memory Wall. Because whether you are loud or quiet in your grief, they will always be remembered by us.

~ With care

I WILL BE HERE

Read by Olivia Wagner at the Braintree IOAD Ceremony

ADAPTED FROM STEVEN CURTIS CHAPMAN

Tomorrow morning if you wake up
And the sun does not feel like it will appear
I will still be here

If in the dark you lose sight of love
Imagine my hand and have no fear
Because I will still be here

I will still be here
When you feel like being quiet
When you need to speak your mind
I will listen

And I will still be here

When the laughter turns to crying
Through the longing, missing and sighing

We will still be together
Because I will still be here

Tomorrow morning if you wake up
And the future is unclear
I will still be here

As sure as seasons are made for change
Our lifetimes are made for uncertain years

I will still be here

And you can talk to me like you always do

When the quiet seems like it will take over  you

I will hold you, site unseen

I will still be here

And I will always be here

To watch you live
And tell you all the things you are to me

If you listen very carefully
I will be here until your end

When we will be together again

And yet I will always be here.

The Sun Will Rise Weekly Update

Week of August 25, 2024

Hello Friends,

We have one in-person regular group, one in-person specialty group, one hybrid group, two regular zoom groups and three specialty zoom groups this week. Login and location info. follow at the bottom of this newsletter.

INTERNATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY

This Saturday marks the 23rd year that this awareness day has been observed on August 31st. The sheer number of lives lost in the world due to any manner of substance use is beyond fathomable and my heart hurts when I think of all the families, friends, co-workers, and direct service providers left behind. In 2023, in the US alone, 178,000 deaths were attributed to alcohol and 107,000 to overdose. Although we will gather together in many ways this week, we acknowledge that these awareness events can be emotional and overwhelming. As you choose to attend or not attend International Overdose Awareness Day events this week, know that we at The Sun Will Rise Foundation will be thinking of you. For those of you speaking at, hosting, manning a resource table at any of the IOAD events, we thank you. We have lots of group support this week for anyone wanting to talk about their feelings surrounding these events, please join us.

~ With care

The Sun Will Rise Weekly Update

Week of August 18, 2024

Hello Friends,

We have four in-person regular groups, one in-person specialty group, one regular zoom group and one specialty zoom groups this week. Login and location info. follow at the bottom of this newsletter.

GRIEF CONFERENCE:

Registration for the 2024 SADOD Finding Support in Grief Conference is open! I am excited to be presenting the session, Remembering Lives, Sharing Stories: An Interactive Grief Workshop and chairing both the Glow Stick Ceremony on Sunday and the Swag Bags for conference attendees. This is the third year for the conference and I have come to see that attending a grief conference for people bereaved due to substance use-related causes offers unique benefits. It provides a space where your experiences are understood and validated by others who have faced similar losses. Speakers share insights into coping strategies and the specific challenges associated with substance use-related grief, helping you learn and grow. The connections made at these conferences can form a supportive community that offers ongoing comfort and encouragement. Sharing your story and hearing others’ can be powerful steps in healing, reinforcing that your feelings are normal and valid. I’ve always felt that a grief conferences provide messages of hope and resilience, showing that despite the profound loss, there is a path forward. In the next few weeks, I will highlight different workshop sessions or activities being hosted by some of TSWR facilitators and team members. Please join us! Details, hotel info. and agenda are available on the registration page. Register today!

The Sun Will Rise Weekly Update

Hello Friends,

We have one in person specialty group and seven specialty zoom groups this week. Login and location info follow at the bottom of this newsletter.

GRIEF & JOY:

Today, The Sun Will Rise joined together with Team Sharing, to bring a group of 62 grievers to Kimball Farm, and it was a beautiful reminder that grief and joy can coexist. Amid the families there that had experienced great pain, there were lots of moments of laughter and genuine happiness. Sharing a meal and ice cream, playing mini-golf, riding the bumper boats and simply being together allowed us to see that it's possible to feel joy even while grieving. It showed us that even in our darkest times, we can still find pockets of joy and connection with others, and that's something truly comforting and hopeful. Read more about grief & joy at Option B. Join us at our next event!

~ With care
